Frequently asked questions

What ages is Sum Rockets for?

Ages 4–11, from Reception to Year 6. When you add a child you choose their school year, and the app sets up recommended questions for that year – you can change them at any time.

What does the free version include?
  • Practice and Beat the Clock
  • Adding, taking away, times and dividing with 2, 5 and 10 (including the 2×, 5× and 10× tables)
  • Badges, the space journey and the Progress tab
  • Star Shop rockets, suits and backgrounds up to 700 stars
  • A weekly summary report for parents
  • Up to 2 children, and Friends
What does the £4.99 unlock add?

One payment unlocks everything, for good – no subscription and no ads:

  • Every number for + − × ÷, and all times tables 1× to 20×
  • Bigger + and − levels: 2-digit ± 2-digit and 3-digit ± ones, tens or hundreds
  • Speed Round, MTC Check, Fix-It Round and Daily Challenge
  • Up to 4 children (2 in the free version)
  • Column layout and Speed Round timer settings
  • Full progress reports
  • Every avatar, plus the top 3 rockets, suits and backgrounds (800–1,000 stars)
How do I restore my purchase?

Open the parent area, then General settings → Restore Purchase (it's also on the unlock screen). Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with.

Does Family Sharing work?

Yes. If you use Family Sharing with purchase sharing turned on, everyone in your family group gets the full version on their own iPhone. If a child's iPhone uses Ask to Buy, the app shows “Waiting for approval from a parent or guardian” and unlocks automatically once it's approved.

How many children can I add?

Up to 2 children in the free version and up to 4 with the full version. Add a child from the parent area with “+ Add child”.

What is the parental gate?

A quick grown-ups-only check: the app shows a number in words (for example “fifty-seven”) and you type it in digits. It protects the parent area – settings, reports, purchases, Friends and any links that leave the app – so children can't change things by accident.

How do Friends work?

Friends lets your child race children from families you know in a weekly league and send friendly maths challenges (20 questions, the same for both). It uses Apple's iCloud – both phones need to be signed in to iCloud.

  • Invite a family: Parent area → Friends → choose your child → Add a friend. Show the code to the other parent, or tap “Share invite link”. Each code works once and expires after 24 hours.
  • Accept an invite: open the link the other parent sent you, or go to Parent area → Friends → Scan a friend's code. Choose your child and accept – that's it, no second approval.
  • Remove a friend: Parent area → Friends → tap the friend → Remove friend. You'll both disappear from each other's friends list.
Is Friends safe?

Yes. Only a parent, behind the parental gate, can invite, accept or remove a friend. There's no chat and children can't type messages to each other. Friends see only the name you choose to show (a nickname is fine), the avatar, year group, journey stop, weekly stars and challenge scores – and you can hide your child's scores at any time. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what's shared.

My friend's invite link doesn't open the app – what do I do?
  • Open the link on the iPhone that has Sum Rockets installed, and make sure the app is up to date and the iPhone is signed in to iCloud.
  • Or copy the link, then in Sum Rockets go to Parent area → Friends → Scan a friend's code → Open an invite link instead and paste it.
  • Each invite works once and expires after 24 hours. If the app says “This code has expired” or “This code has already been used”, ask the other parent for a new one.
  • If it says “Friends needs iCloud”, sign in to iCloud in iOS Settings.
How do I change times tables, difficulty or the curriculum year?

Open the parent area and tap Question Settings on your child's card. You can choose the operations, which times tables (and whether they go up to 12× or 20×), the mental-maths levels for + and −, carrying and borrowing, the question format and layout, and how many questions are in a round – or tap “Use recommended for” your child's year. Edit profile changes their school year. The “Let your child pick what to practise” switch on your child's dashboard card (it shows their name) lets them choose within your settings.

What is the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) mode?

In England, children in Year 4 take the Multiplication Tables Check: 25 times-table questions from the 2 to 12 times tables, with 6 seconds to answer each. Sum Rockets' MTC Check (full version) practises exactly that format, without right/wrong feedback during the check, then shows the results – and Reports shows how ready your child is.

How do reminders work, and how do I turn them off?

The daily practice reminder is a friendly nudge at a time you choose (6 PM to start with). It's only sent on days when a child hasn't practised yet, and it never shows a child's name on the lock screen – just “🚀 Time for today's mission! Your rocket is waiting.” Turn it on or off, and change the time, in Parent area → General settings → Daily practice reminder – or turn off Sum Rockets notifications in iOS Settings.

How do I reset a child's progress or delete a child?
  • Restart the space journey: Parent area → Edit profile → Reset journey. They start again from Earth; stars, badges and settings stay.
  • Delete a child: Parent area → Edit profile → Remove. Their progress, badges and stars are deleted (and their Friends data). This can't be undone.
  • To start completely afresh, remove the child and add them again.
Which devices are supported?

iPhone with iOS 18 or later.
